Saving Chaos: Connecting 2 Texts
Onboarding is important process in all agencies, but that doesn’t mean it has to be dull. An internal project at Border set out to reimagine the onboarding experience to be more engaging, cohesive, and human-centered. Aiming to connect and inspire new talent across distributed agencies.
Design a micro-macro booklet piecing together one large and one short piece of text to capture a shared sentiment.
☆Interpretation & thinking
I used Saving Francesca by Melina Marchetta (macro) and The Chaos of Stars by Kiersten White (micro) to capture the beauty and depth of the complexities of family relationships and how they affect personal growth and self-awareness.

☆ Experimental.
I wanted to blend type and graphics in an experimental style to flexibly design for a range of emotions.
☆ Color / Abstract.
To achieve something that could be understood by all, I took an a colorful, abstract approach in expressing emotion.
☆ Grouping by emotion.
By grouping chapters by emotion, I could stagger the feel / progression of the story. This allowed me to fit both the macro and micro text while giving me enough room to play with imagery and text. Switching between a focus on imagery and typography on each page allowed me to explore different depths of emotion.
☆ Distorting text.
To highlight pieces of the macro text, I used distorted key pieces of the text to express the fragility and voice of the text.
☆ Layering images.
To show the depth of emotion, I thought it would be interesting to layer images and colors to create something new and unique.
☆ Saving Chaos
This book features a multitude of emotions divided between Saving Francesca (macro) and The Chaos of Stars (micro). Separated by the a focus on imagery in the micro pages and text in the macro pages, the two pieces come together to create a beautiful story of the power of family. Within its pages, there is a tense visualization of what family is to us and how it affects our self discovery. No matter how much some may deny their familial connections, sometimes we cannot avoid how it tugs at our heart.
