I Ran Out Naked in the Sun
A creative exploration aimed at interpreting a chosen poem and designing a broadside capturing its essence and emotion.
A collaboration with SDSU's English and Comparative Literature Department and Poetry International.
Create a design that features the full text of the poem as well as associated imagery and place's the poems title as the focus.
☆Interpretation & thinking
What stuck out to me was this combination of fearlessness of "running out naked" and the repetition of "who could blame me," like it was repeated out of some small part of a need for acceptance. I wanted to capture this dynamic in my interpretation.
☆ Should the visual of the title take on it's meaning in a literal sense (sun iconography)?
☆ Should I only use the title or emphasize part of the poem?
☆ What are some layouts I can explore that can work together with the title design?
☆ Layout.
How should I place the title along with the rest of the poem, possible imagery, and graphics?
☆ Imagery.
What do I want to be the main focus, the text or the imagery?
☆ Typography.
How can I play with the typography to dictate how the reader moves through the poem?
☆ Unapologetic nature.
As stated before, I believed that the poem had an interesting dynamic between this brazen, unapologetic action of "running out naked" and seeking acceptance. I wanted to highlight both the title and the repeated "who could blame me" to capture this.
☆ Out in the open.
To ensure that the reader focused soley on the poem, I limited the use of imagery / graphics and focused more on the typography and placement to dictate how the reader would move through the poem. I believed that using any imagery would disrupt and unintentionally display notes of being ashamed when this wasn't the case.
